HACIENDA EL TERNERO - Rioja Alta (Spain)
Hacienda El Ternero is a historic boutique winery located in a unique enclave in Burgos, at the heart of the Rioja Alta region. The estate dates back to 1077 AD, when it served as a farm for the monastery of Santa María de Herrera. It is the only winery in Castile and León permitted to produce wines under the protected designation of origin D.O.Ca. Rioja. The estate covers 250 hectares, including 120 hectares of vineyards planted at an average altitude of 650 to 700 meters — noticeably higher than is typical in Rioja. This elevation, combined with limestone soils, produces wines with freshness, complexity, elegance, and structure, making El Ternero one of the region’s most distinctive bodegas. Only the highest-quality French oak barrels are used (never American), resulting in wines that are not dominated by vanilla or heavy oak but instead show balance and minerality. These wines also offer impressive aging potential and reveal their full character after several years. Their artisanal and unique profile makes them a must for any wine enthusiast seeking exceptional discoveries.
